In 30 seconds

RoleIn PvE, the Gladiator always tanks: if your group has no Templar, the boss is yours. But Gladiators deal enough damage to sometimes outpace pure damage dealers.
Core rotationKeep using Rending Blow → Overhead Slam; use buffs whenever they come off cooldown.
Key skillsOverhead Slam, Rending Blow, Ruinous Blow — level these first.
Key stigmaRage Burst: 10 seconds of Overhead Slam without waiting for a random proc.
StatsMight → Accuracy → Intelligence; for divine stats, prioritize Wisdom and Destruction.

What is the class, and who is it for?

The Gladiator is a classic melee warrior. Its damage revolves around one combo: fast Rending Blow and heavy Overhead Slam. The whole build — specializations, stigmas, Soul Binding, and Arcana — is built around it.

This class suits players who want high damage without a long rotation and do not mind standing right next to the boss. Its strong survivability forgives mistakes.

The Gladiator is a tankIn PvE, the Gladiator is considered a tank, so you cannot build entirely for damage. If your group has no Templar, the boss will attack you. It is usually best not to put a Gladiator and a Templar in the same group, since some of their buffs do not stack. With equal gear, pure damage dealers still deal more damage: the Gladiator is a tank that hits very hard, not a damage dealer with extra health.
Holding aggro without a tauntThe Gladiator has no taunt skill. You hold aggro through damage: Keen Strike, Rending Blow, and Overhead Slam all increase Enmity. These are your main attacks — keep hitting the boss and it will stay focused on you.

Your role in combat

In a groupDeal the main damage to the boss and keep Prepare for Battle active for nearly the whole fight. Experienced Counterstrike boosts the whole group's damage when you block.
SoloGather mobs quickly with Leaping Slam, finish them with area skills, and recover with Blood Absorption and Lifestealing Blade.

What you need to know

  • Overhead Slam is your main source of damage. It normally works only on a knocked-down target, but against bosses immune to immobilization, each attack has a 7% chance to trigger it — so keep pressing it.
  • Rage Burst makes Overhead Slam available for 10 seconds without a proc. This is your main damage window.
  • Ruinous Blow grants Prepare for Battle for 20 seconds: +20% PvE damage, +100 Critical Hit, and +15% chance to activate negative effects. Keep it active.
  • Solve MP problems with the Rending Blow specialization that restores MP on a critical hit. Until then, Keen Strike restores MP.
  • Level passive skills and Soul Binding skills using the same priorities so your points stay focused.

Active skills and specializations

Below are the skills you will actually use and the specializations to equip. Options are listed in priority order. Specializations unlock at skill levels 8, 12, and 20; the strongest options only become available at levels 12–16. Use what is available, then switch later.

Core combo

Support and movement

Other active skills are situational. Crushing Wave and Ankle Slice are useful against groups of mobs; Mocking Blade deals Stagger damage; Sword Aura Rampage is only for a staggered enemy; Aerial Snare is rarely used.

First Rending Blow specialization: movementAt level 8, take Changes to mobile skill right away. Without it, Rending Blow roots you in place, and you use it constantly — the class feels clunky. This is the most important specialization while levelling.

Passive skills

Gladiator passives are offensive or defensive. Start with the offensive ones: they increase your damage and your group's.

Stigmas

Stigma window: all class stigmas and their effects at +5, +10, +15, and +20

You can equip only a limited number of stigmas, and only a few will reach the maximum level. You do not choose stigma effects at +5, +10, +15, and +20; they unlock automatically. The key choice is which stigmas to bring to each activity.

Global has 4 stigma slotsThe Korean and Taiwanese versions have more stigma slots, so their guides show 6–7 stigmas on the bar. Global has four slots, unlocked at levels 22, 27, 32, and 37. That means two stigmas stay equipped all the time, while the other two change for the content.

The most situational of the seven, and more often used in PvP.

Raise stigma levels evenly: upgrade costs rise sharply with each level, and one max-level stigma is usually less useful than several at mid-level.

Stigma levelling order

  1. Rage Burst to 5Cooldown drops from 45 to 30 seconds, making Overhead Slam without a cooldown available much more often.
  2. Focused Block to 5Two Block charges mean you can always block the boss's first hit.
  3. Lunge Stance to 20At level 20, each Critical Hit has a 50% chance to reduce all skill cooldowns by 1 second. Your buffs and Rage Burst stay up nearly all the time.

Global: what we compared

Skills valued more highly in Global

Always attack from the frontBoth approaches agree on one thing: Experienced Counterstrike boosts frontal damage. The most common Gladiator mistake is running behind the boss. Stand in front of it and stay there.

Rotation

Gladiator boss rotation: opener and repeating cycle
Gladiator boss rotation: opener and repeating cycle

The Gladiator is a simple class. The rotation comes down to one rule: use buffs when ready, and fill the gaps with Rending Blow and Overhead Slam without stopping.

Combat cycle

  1. Step 01 — engageUse Ruinous Blow on the target: dash, damage, and 20 seconds of Prepare for Battle.
  2. Step 02 — damage windowUse Lunge Stance, Zikel's Blessing, and Wave Armor, then Rage Burst and 10 seconds of repeated Overhead Slam. Use Lifestealing Blade whenever it is ready.
  3. Step 03 — core cycleRending Blow → Overhead Slam whenever it is available, then repeat. Every hit has a 7% chance to trigger Overhead Slam.

Critical Hits during Lunge Stance reduce all skill cooldowns, so Rage Burst and Ruinous Blow come back much faster. If the boss forces you away, Leaping Slam and Rush Strike get you back to the target.

Block the boss's first attackWhen you block, Experienced Counterstrike gives the whole group a damage buff for 20 seconds. A good Gladiator opens by approaching the boss and blocking its first attack with Focused Block. Each boss has a different opener — learn it and time your Block accordingly (sometimes before using buffs).

Always attack from the front: Experienced Counterstrike boosts frontal damage. Enable Esc → Settings → Display → Combat → Boss Direction Indicator so you can always see which way the boss is facing.

The main mistakeDo not wait for Overhead Slam to light up — keep using the combo. Every second without an attack is a lost chance for it to trigger.

Macros and animation cancelling

Your levelling macro and level-45 macro are different:

StageWhat to holdWhy
While levellingLMB (Keen Strike) + macro keyOne row in the macro: Rage Burst → Overhead Slam → Rending Blow. Keen Strike restores MP
Level 45, Overhead Slam and Rending Blow at 16Macro key onlyOverhead Slam has no cooldown, and Rending Blow restores MP on Critical Hits — Keen Strike is no longer needed

Animation cancelling. Hold the macro key (RMB) and LMB at the same time to interrupt one attack animation with another and increase damage per second. A dark shadow around your character means the cancel worked. The macro almost always cancels successfully; doing it by hand is less consistent. Some level-45 Gladiators still hold LMB with the macro: in high-ping tests, it dealt slightly more damage. Test both on a training dummy to see what works for you.

The Rending Blow → Overhead Slam combo works well on a macro, but its delays depend on your ping: a setup that works for one player may miss inputs for another. Tune it on a training dummy. Keep buffs, Defiance, and movement on separate keys. See Skill Macros for how to make a macro and what to leave out.

Soul Binding

Aim for the options near the top of each list; leave lower-priority options to fill slots as your gear unlocks them. You can swap adjacent positions. Passive skill names in the table are skill-level bonuses.

Fill rings last: Arcana drop with random skills, and rings cover what you are missing. Aim to bring Overhead Slam, Rending Blow, and Ruinous Blow to level 20.

Mana StonesMana Stone insertion is random, and spent stones are not returned. Accept a decent result and move on — do not burn resources chasing a perfect stone.

Arcana

Arcana set bonuses depend on the dungeons and will change, but the skills on the cards stay useful. Look for them in this order:

ArcanaSkills in priority order
ChaliceAttack Preparation, Experienced Counterstrike, Impact Hit, Death Energy, Overhead Slam, Ruinous Blow
ParchmentOverhead Slam, Ruinous Blow, Leaping Slam, Keen Strike, Ankle Slice
CompassRending Blow, Defiance, Crushing Wave, Sword Aura Rampage, Rush Strike
BellAttack Preparation, Survival Stance, Blood Absorption, Survival Willpower, Destructive Impulse
MirrorDeath Energy, Impact Hit, Experienced Counterstrike, Identify Weakness, Protection Armor

Chalice can grant any class skill, so look there for the strongest offensive passives. The other cards are limited to their own skill groups.

Daevanion

Gladiator class Daevanion board

Choose your own route across the board, but follow this rule: orange nodes are more important than blue, blue than green, and green than white. Take offensive stats first, then skill nodes in the same order as the skill priorities above. View the Gladiator board in Daevanion.

Genus Insight

Genus Insight is an important system where it is easy to waste resources. On each of the five boards, first get at least 2% Double Chance in slots 3 and 9. Only then lock and reroll the other slots.

SlotWhat to look for
1Accuracy 35+, Critical Hit 25+, or Boss Attack 14+
2Additional Attack 14+
3Double Chance 2%+
4Accuracy 35+, Critical Hit 25+, or Boss Attack 14+
5Additional Attack 14+
6Accuracy 35+, Critical Hit 25+, PvE damage resistance 2.5+, or Boss Attack 14+
7Accuracy 35+, Critical Hit 25+, or Boss Attack 14+
8Additional Attack 14+
9Double Chance 2%+

On the last board (the Exotic Lineage), look for Additional Attack 14+ in slots 1, 4, and 7 instead.

Titles

Top Gladiators often use Playing God for offense, Rule All Creation for defense, and Empty Closet for useful effects. Find them in Titles.

PvE and PvP

The Gladiator excels in PvE: keep Prepare for Battle active, do not miss the Rage Burst window, and stand where Experienced Counterstrike can trigger — deal damage from the front and give the group a bonus when you block.

In PvP, control and survival matter more. Blade Toss reduces the target's Defense and healing; Focused Block and Defiance help you survive an enemy burst. Keep a separate stigma setup for PvP.

Common mistakes

  1. Waiting for Overhead SlamIts 7% chance comes from attacks; pausing lowers your damage.
  2. Wasting Rage BurstYou lose its 10-second window while moving or during a boss immunity phase.
  3. Letting Prepare for Battle expireThat means 20% less PvE damage until the next Ruinous Blow.
  4. Missing the MP optionWithout it, you have to spend time using Keen Strike.
  5. Maxing one stigma at a timeUpgrades get more expensive with each level — raise them evenly.
  6. Rerolling Genus Insight from the endWithout Double Chance in slots 3 and 9, it is too early to lock the other slots.

Checklist before serious content

Gladiator readiness

  • Overhead Slam, Rending Blow, and Ruinous Blow are level 20;
  • Rending Blow has its MP-on-Critical-Hit option;
  • Overhead Slam has its cooldown removed and guaranteed Critical Hit;
  • Rage Burst and Lunge Stance are in your stigma setup;
  • Defiance and movement are on separate keys;
  • Genus Insight has at least 2% Double Chance in slots 3 and 9 on every board;
  • the macro has been tested on a training dummy at your ping.

The key point

The Gladiator is all about using Rending Blow and Overhead Slam without pauses, while keeping Prepare for Battle up and using Rage Burst whenever it is ready. Level the three key skills to 20, take the MP and cooldown options, and collect damage passives through Soul Binding and Arcana. You will unlock the class's potential without a complicated rotation.
